TAROT HISTORY

According to Tarot historian Tom Tadfor Little, traditional playing cards were first seen in Europe in 1375, having been brought over from the Islamic societies where they had been used for centuries before that. These cards were not, however, Tarot cards. At this point, he says, there is no evidence to show that Tarot cards had yet been created, which goes against many claims that ordinary playing cards evolved from the original Tarot deck.
The earliest known (almost) full deck of Tarot Cards were discovered to be from 1450’s. This was a wedding gift for the Visconti royal family in Milan, decks based on this original can still be bought today.

The cards popularity spread in Europe and all around mainly for entertainment, being seen as a game initially, rather than a tool of divination as they are usually used now. In the late 18th century, it began to be used for divination in the form of tarotology and cartomancy. From the late 18th century until the present time the tarot has also been used by spiritualists, mystics and occultists in efforts at divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways. As time went on the Tarot cards popularity grew globally and adjustments to the Tarot deck design grew and adopted a more modern feel. Today there are thousands of Tarot Decks which portray different or the same spiritual aspects of the card. Readers will often pick a deck they are more intuitively attuned to. For a picture speaks a thousand words.
Carl Gustuv Jung

I’d like to turn your attention to an intelligent man, psychoanalysis pioneer Carl Gustuv Jung (1875-1961). Jung was fascinated
by the patterns of life and the way seemingly unconnected events were in fact connected. He noted that every day of human experience is filled with what could only be called meaningful coincidences, or synchronicity.
Jung’s study of synchronistic events led him to examine ancient occult practices from Astrology to the I Ching, and the Tarot was no exception. He found that the mysteries revealed by these practices were in fact not mysteries at all, but events common to each of us on our paths to life. Jung Called our common situations (and common recurrent characters) architypes and believed that ancient fortune-telling methods revealed these architypes to us symbolically. He noted that all the modern science “is based on the principle of causality”, occult methods look to a “picture of the moment”. Jung concluded the pictures on tarot cards are “ descended from the archetypes of transformation”.
